DigiPen Opening Ceremony
Remarks by Ambassador Patricia Herbold

DigiPen Institute of Technology Singapore
PIXEL Building #01-01
10 Central Exchange Green, Singapore

July 4, 2008

Thank you, Mr. Lee.

Minister Lim, Mr. Comair, Mr. Leckman, ladies and gentlemen, good morning and Happy American Independence Day!

I would like to congratulate the DigiPen Institute of Technology on the Grand Opening of the Institute’s Singapore Campus.  DigiPen has strong ties to Washington State, so I find it particularly gratifying to be here this morning, as a fellow Washingtonian who has made her way to Singapore, to welcome DigiPen and its innovative programs.

I know that there is a strong commitment by the Ministries of Education and of Trade and Industry, as well as the Economic Development Board, to bringing world-class and innovative educational programs to Singapore.  America wants to be a good partner in this process, looking for win-win outcomes that benefit both societies and economies.

The United States has the largest and most versatile system of higher education in the world.  Our system is responsive to the needs of industry, thanks in no small part to innovators like DigiPen.  DigiPen recognized the potential of the video game industry and became a pioneer in interactive entertainment education.  In May 1996 DigiPen was authorized to award Associate and Bachelor of Science Degrees in Real-Time Interactive Simulation, the world's first bachelor degree program dedicated to computer/video game development.

The U.S. educational system challenges students to develop their skills in critical analysis and creative thought, making the students who study in the American system leaders in their fields.  DigiPen’s Singapore campus will give local students the same comprehensive education as their U.S. counterparts, ensuring that the educational experience is one that truly prepares them for the rigors of the industry.

DigiPen and the young men and women who study here are primed to reach the highest levels in that highly complex Real-Time Interactive Simulation we call life.

I congratulate you on the opening and wish you the best of luck for the future.

Thank you.
