U.S. First Lady Delights Singaporean Children With Storytelling Session
November 16, 2006
During the visit of President and Mrs. Bush to Singapore, the Office of Public Affairs organized a special storytelling session by the First Lady at the National Library Board’s (NLB) Central Library, an American Connections partner. The thirty Singaporean children participating in the session were members of kidsREAD, an NLB reading program to promote the love of reading among children of low income families, and residents of the Jamiyah Children’s Home for Malay-Muslim orphans and neglected youngsters. The children enjoyed the opportunity to hear Mrs. Bush read them a story on the value of friendship. The First Lady also answered questions from the children, often including interesting details in her responses, such as how her passion for reading led her to become a librarian. The storytelling session was the highlight of Mrs. Bush’s visit to the Library, which also included a tour of a special collection of rare books on Asia’s history.
