Fulbright Visiting Researcher Program

2008-2009 Fulbright Visiting Research Grants
(approximately three grants for three months each)

The United States Government is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 annual competition for three-month Fulbright Visiting Research Grants.  These grants are for non-degree research for university faculty and professionals to develop their academic and professional expertise in collaboration with American colleagues.  Younger faculty are encouraged to apply.

The research should be conducted any time between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009. The grant will cover round trip international airfare (economy class) on an American carrier, living, book and settling-in allowances.

As the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government, the Fulbright Program is designed, in the words of U.S. Government legislation, “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.”  With this goal in mind, since its inception more than fifty years ago, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 278,000 participants with the opportunity to observe each other’s political and economic institutions and cultures and to exchange ideas.

The objectives of the program are to enable recipients to pursue a particular field of study and to develop leaders who can contribute to promoting better understanding between the United States and Singapore.

Priority will be given to the social sciences and humanities as they relate to the United States and Singapore.  Within the natural and applied sciences, only policy-oriented proposals related to program 2 below would be considered.

1.  The United States—study of U.S. society and culture through such fields as history, government, international relations, economics, law, business, literature, intellectual history, sociology, religious pluralism, and cultural anthropology.

2.   Challenges of Contemporary Society – comparative studies of contemporary civil society and social issues in Singapore and the United States.  Subjects of particular interest include risk or crisis management issues, the impact of rapid technological development, (including challenges from the new media), finite resources, energy supply and environmental issues, transformation in educational systems, urbanization, gerontology and the family.

Eligibility

A.   Applicants must be Singapore citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.

B.   Preference will be given to full-time assistants, lecturers, assistant professors, associate professors or professors with at least 5 years teaching experience at Singapore universities.  Grantees are expected to continue to teach at Singapore universities upon their completion of the program.  Individuals with doctoral degrees or equivalent professional training or experience are eligible to apply.

C.   Preference will be given to applicants with little or no experience in the United States.

D.   Applicants below 45 years of age at the time of application are preferred.

E.   Good health.  Applicants selected for a Fulbright grant are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be finalized.

Application Procedure and Competition Schedule

• August 2007 – Competition opens.
• October 1, 2007 – Deadline for applicants to submit their curriculum vitae and one-page proposed research activity.  After preliminary review, applicants who meet basic requirements and whose proposals are relevant to programs as outlined above will be sent program application forms.
• December 3, 2007 – Deadline for submission of completed application.
• Mid-December 2007 – Notification of candidacy by Embassy.
• March/April 2008 – Notification of candidacy by Fulbright Scholarship Board, Washington D.C.
• May/June 2008 – Confirmation of candidacy.
• September 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009 – Departure for the United States.
