Data Mining Speaker Discusses Web Intelligence And Terrorism Research

The Office of Public Affairs, Singapore supported the keynote speaker participation of American data mining expert Jaideep Srivastava at a Terrorism Research Tools seminar. The seminar was part of a larger conference arranged by the National Library Board (NLB) - an American Connection partner - and the Ministries of Home Affairs and Defense. More than 200 information professionals and security experts heard Prof Srivastava, a computer science professor at the University of Minnesota, share his experience in data mining research and paradigms in collaborative filtering and web intelligence. He also examined the challenges and opportunities in deploying artificial intelligence tools and systems for purposes of intelligence research. The seminar set the stage for the NLB's ambitious plans to establish a reputable database on terrorism research and Asian hub for Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI) Research.

During a three-day visit to Singapore supported by Office of Public Affairs, Professor Jaideep Srivastava of the University of Minnesota shared his computer science expertise with regional counterterrorism experts. Speaking at the Pacific Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining, Professor Jaideep told security and intelligence professionals about the latest technological tools available to combat terrorists. Professor Jaideep conducted a special tutorial for terrorism analysts at Singapore's International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (ICPVTR). The analysts, who monitor jihadist websites, were especially interested in learning about data mining techniques for gaining insight in to terrorist activity.
