Ralph Cossa, well-known American authority on Asian security issues and President of the Pacific Forum - CSIS, spoke about North Korea at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs August 12. His remarks -- and the lively Q & A session that followed -- focused primarily on current multilateral efforts to persuade the North Korean regime to honor its NPT commitments, and stop its efforts to restart a nuclear research/weapons program. Describing North Korea's principal exports as drugs, weapons, and threats, Cossa said it must not be allowed to add fissile materials to the list. Singaporean and American participants felt their SIIA dialogue was useful and informative, the subject timely and topical, a welcomed opportunity to examine an issue of critical importance for the region.
